Slim Chance To Host Spam & Grits Friday

In what promises to be a stunning showcase of fine Atlanta music throughout the ages, James Kelly will guest host WRFG's Spam & Grits show on Friday night from 8-10pm. No one knows country, cracker-roots music better'n James, a.k.a Slim Chance of longtime Atlanta honky tonkin' band, Slim Chance and the Convicts... and of numerous other ventures and pursuits to benefit humanity. Says Slim:
This show will feature only music by alt. country, folk, bluegrass, rockabilly, and various artists from the Atlanta and surrounding region. I have dug deep in the archives of the Slim chance Music Museum, and come up with a slew of great obscure and long lost material. There are artists who you haven't heard in years, artists who have moved away but maintain their Georgia identity, artists who are probably playing this weekend, and artists who have left this mortal coil, but are still missed. We're gonna have a lot of fun with this one friends, I promise.
Also, this is pledge drive time at WRFG. Support Atlanta's best alt-radio in whatever way you can. The number is (404) 523-8989. You can also pledge online here.

Redneck Literati Underground

Slim and his boys have quite a honky-tonk weekend lined-up, with a special ticket-price nod to mommas on Mother's Day.

Friday May 11 at Smith's Olde Bar - Slim Chance & the Convicts will be playing at approximately 8:55PM as part of the 500 Songs For Kids event. Come early to see all the other cool acts, each doing one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (as determined by Rolling Stone Magazine). We are doing #79, a tune about a guy with a tambourine. Music starts at 7PM, Cover is $7 and it all goes to a children's charity group. (SGR staff may try to make this one.)

Sunday May 13 at Smith's Olde Bar - the Wrights with opening act Byrd's Auto Parts, featuring the amazing Jon Byrd. Showtime is 9PM, I think the cover is $12 adv, and Mothers get in for half price.

PS: Mark your calendars for June 23, when Honky Tonk Meets Heavy Metal at Lenny's. Slim Chance & the Convicts will perform along with Dark Overlord!

NASCAR Ignored

Reminded by a mention of Darlington Raceway in a conversation over the weeked, I felt just the tiniest twinge of guilt that I've consciously ignored such a huge portion of my Southern heritage and culture for my entire life, outside of a trip to Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA at the urging of my pal James "Slim Chance" Kelly, shown below at Dixie Speedway cooking-up large meat items with his best-gal Claire.

So to counter my gross lifetime NASCAR deficit, I listened to Cap'n Herb's pre-race show while showering. Traffic insane today near Atlanta Motor Speedway, but nothing like the maniacal tone of The Capn's commentary.

Well, that's enough stock car media for me for this decade!
