That's an old lighting designer trick! In a previous lifetime actors frequently asked griftdrift, "why the hell are you walking around with your hand in the air?"
I've been in "the biz" for about 20 years, and I've never seen anyone do this! Then again, I'm usually too busy knocking over gear and yapping to pay much attention to other stuff. Some photogs could just use their bald heads. Or their audio tech's bald head.
It's really a theater thing I think. In theater you are setting up so many lights to do so many things that you have to make sure you have everything covered. Unlike a video shoot, you can't halt the performance right in the middle and yell, "I need to move a light".
